This month we are delighted to catch up with our Sales Manager for Middle East, Africa, India and Poland, Olga Paz. Olga covers all Lab Products across sister companies Edinburgh Sensors, Froilabo, Precisa and Dynamica. Find out what a typical day looks like for Olga and what she enjoys doing outside of work.
Can you describe a typical day?
The only thing that is always scheduled is to feed my cats – even if I tried changing it they would come and physically take me to the kitchen to fulfil their morning request. The rest of the day is never “typical”. Of course there are emails to respond to, plans and calls to make, and meetings to attend, but the matter of each is almost always different. Some days are easier than others but in the end it’s never boring.
What do you like most about your job?
Cultural variety! It is fascinating. From the simple culture of emailing and working patterns, through to the handling of meetings and conversations to the way business is handled – everything is slightly different. My territory includes Africa, India, Middle East and Poland – almost full cultural spectrum. I love the cultural mix I am dealing with all the time.
Are there any challenges that come with the job?
The cultural mix is great but it does bring many challenges. Time difference requires very accurate planning. When I am still asleep in bed people in India are already up and running, so I wake up to a full mailbox which becomes my priority. When I need anything from distributors in Middle East on Friday I know I will get answers on Sunday because their weekend falls into Friday and Saturday. Adapting to time differences is nothing compared to adjusting to the way I communicate with people across my territories. What is considered friendly in one country might be considered rude in another (we all know that in Germany, two fingers up will most likely get you two beers, whilst in the UK, you might get into trouble).
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
If you can’t find me in the office (or my home office) emailing, calling, meeting and finding solutions, or in the kitchen experimenting with some new cuisine – you will for sure find me at the gym. If the weather isn’t particularly “Scottish”, there is a chance I will be walking up some hills or exploring another highland walking path. I am pretty confident the word that describes me the most is – Active.
Do you have any goals you would like to achieve for the year ahead?
I do have many goals – professionally and privately. I want to draw a new, improved network within my territory, making sure everyone feels motivated, informed and confident with our plans and ideas. I would like to visit some of my key distributors and arrange meetings and training with new ones to ensure the highest quality service for our clients. Privately – I want to go back to learning German – the most beautiful language in the world. I also want to continue my gym training and hit 100kg in squatting (I am not far away from that at the moment). I also have a bucket list and if I can afford it, I would love to tick some of them off – parachuting, ziplining and seeing Rammstein live (again)…
