Carbon Tetrafluoride

NDIR sensor for measuring greenhouse gas concentration.

Tetrafluoromethane is a potent greenhouse gas that has an atmospheric lifetime of 50,000 years. It is used as a low temperature refrigerant and also as a plasma etchant in electronics fabrication. The main industrial emissions of CF4 are as a by-product of smelting aluminium. As a fluorinated hydrocarbon, it absorbs strongly in the infrared and can be detected with NDIR sensors.
