Edinburgh Instruments (EI) founded as the first private spin-out company on Britain's first University "Research Park". The company was founded by Professor Des Smith, OBE, FRS, FRSE, FInstP when Head of the Physics Department at Heriot Watt University.
Edinburgh Instruments sets up a joint venture with International Gas Detectors, called EIGD Detectors (IGD). During the 80's the development of potentially the first ever microprocessor controlled CO2 gas sensor with a digital display was launched and the development of a new NDIR Gas Sensor - the OEM Gascard took place.
The 90's saw the relocation of Edinburgh Sensors to the new custom built premises in Livingston, the winning of significant contracts to develop IRceL Series Gas Sensors for CO2 and Hydrocarbons, the launch of a low cost single channel analogue OEM CO2 gas sensor module - the Gascheck and the launch of a self-aspirating CO2 monitor for use in the horticultural markets.
2000's has seen a further development of the current products and the launch of new products such IRgaskiT and OEM Chillcard Sensor for SF6.
The 2010's brought the restructure of Edinburgh Instruments to form three divisions - Edinburgh Instruments Corporate, Edinburgh Photonics and Edinburgh Sensors; the launch of a new generation of Gascard sensors - the Gascard NG , the 40th celebration in business and the aquirement of Edinburgh Instruments by Techcomp Group Ltd.
