From Pretzels to Gas Sensors: A look back at SENSOR + TEST

There’s something about Sensor + Test that always stands out on the calendar — a mix of anticipation, industry reconnection, and a chance to gauge where sensing technology is heading. This year’s trip to Nuremberg was no exception, though it did manage to deliver a few surprises.

The Build-Up: Travel, Energy, and Expectation

When in Nuremburg the city seems to recognise the annual influx and you start spotting familiar faces before even checking in. It’s a reminder that SENSOR+TEST isn’t just about technology; it’s about people, relationships, and conversations that continue long after the event ends.

Day 1 always sets the tone, beginning with the rush of travel and a near marathon through Amsterdam airport to make the connection. Arriving at the conference centre is usually punctuated by last-minute stand adjustments, meeting confirmations, and the familiar “see you there” messages from across the industry.

A Bavarian Start: Pretzels and Beer

No trip to Nuremberg feels complete without embracing a bit of local tradition. After setup and a full day of meetings, we carved out a moment for the essentials: warm pretzels and a cold Bavarian beer.

It’s a simple ritual, but one that reliably marks the start of the week. A brief pause before the real intensity begins.

A First for Me: Rain at SENSOR+TEST

One unexpected twist this year: rain. In all my years attending, I can’t recall ever needing an umbrella. Yet this time, Nuremberg delivered a steady reminder that even well-established routines can change. Dashes between halls became more tactical, and conversations often opened with, “Can you believe the weather?” Oddly enough, it added a bit of character to the event, a shared inconvenience has a way of bringing people together.

The Heart of It All: Conversations

If SENSOR+TEST reinforces anything, it’s that technology is only half the story. The real value lies in the conversations. This year felt particularly energised. From long-standing partners to new introductions, discussions were thoughtful, candid, and forward-looking. We covered everything from evolving customer needs and emerging applications, to the realities of scaling innovation in a fast-moving market.

As Chief Commercial Officer, these exchanges are invaluable. They offer real-time insight that no report can replicate; the nuance, the concerns, the excitement. Reaffirming that collaboration remains central to progress in our industry.

An Unexpected Highlight: The Busiest Lidl I’ve Ever Seen

Not every memorable moment came from the exhibition halls. One evening, in search of something quick, I ended up in what must be the busiest Lidl I’ve ever encountered. It was organised chaos. The aisles packed, the baskets overflowing and people navigating with surprising precision. It felt less like grocery shopping and more like a logistical challenge.

Strangely, it was grounding. Amid all the high-tech discussions and strategic planning, this slice of everyday life was a reminder of the broader world our innovations ultimately serve.

    Looking Back

As the week wrapped up, that familiar mix of exhaustion and satisfaction set in. SENSOR+TEST once again delivered not just as an exhibition, but a meeting point for ideas, relationships, and momentum.

Rain or shine, it remains a highlight of the year. And as I headed home thinking about pretzels, conversations, and unexpectedly crowded supermarkets. One thing was clear, the strength of our industry lies not only in what we build, but in how we come together.

    Until next year, Nuremberg.
