Ensuring reliable and accurate carbon dioxide measurement.

What is Controlled Environment Horticulture?

Controlled environment horticulture (or agriculture) is a technology-based approach toward food production. Modern systems have been developed that are designed to protect, maintain and optimise the growing conditions of crops.

Production takes place within an enclosed growing structure such as a greenhouse or building which uses sophisticated computer controlled sensors, combined with advanced software models that can control not only the temperature, light level and water, but also the level of nutrients, humidity, pH and Carbon Dioxide within the atmosphere.

These growth chambers also allow researchers to study how plant growth changes in elevated CO2 levels, elevated temperatures, and altered water availability. For example, agricultural climate change scenarios can be simulated which allow predictions of and mitigations for future conditions.

How are Gas Sensors used within Controlled Environment Horticulture?

Carbon dioxide enrichment through controlling the environment is required in large glass greenhouses when the CO2 present in the air becomes depleted as this slows down the photosynthesis process and reduces productivity.

Therefore, modern Controlled Environment Horticulture systems often have carbon dioxide sensors to control the release of additional carbon dioxide into the environment.

With accurate and reliable carbon dioxide monitoring being an important part of horticultural climate control, Edinburgh Sensor’s Guardian range includes dual wavelength non-dispersive infrared sensor technology with built-in temperature correction. This ensures reliable and accurate carbon dioxide measurement together with long term stability.
